Join the Audubon team! From working on our native plant demonstration gardens to helping spread the word on protecting nesting shorebirds on the beach, the Theodore Roosevelt Sanctuary and Audubon Center offers many volunteer opportunities for people of all ages, all throughout the year.

In addition to the positions listed below, we offer volunteer days throughout the year at the Sanctuary and elsewhere, including:

  • Beach cleanups
  • Garden volunteer Fridays in the spring and summer
  • Trail and garden maintenance days
  • Installing and removing shorebird protection fencing
  • ...and more!

  • Garden and Trail Maintenance: Our garden and trail maintenance volunteers assist in keeping our native plant demonstration gardens and 14 acres of trails in tip-top shape for birds, pollinators, and community members alike. Prior gardening experience is appreciated, but not necessary.
     
  • Animal Care: The Sanctuary is home to several animal ambassadors who require regular care. Animal care volunteers assist with the feeding, habitat-cleaning, and other needs of our rescue turtles, snake, and insects. Animal care volunteers must be at least 16 years of age.
     
  • Education Volunteers: Our education volunteers assist our experienced teaching staff in providing hands-on educational experiences to students at their schools or at the Sanctuary.
     
  • Programs Volunteers: Programs volunteers help guide our educational and nature-oriented programs at the Sanctuary alongside our experienced education staff.
     
  • Be a Good Egg Outreach Volunteers: Work alongside our Be a Good Egg Outreach Tech to educate beachgoers on the importance of sharing the shore with nesting shorebirds on the beach. Training is provided. Weekends throughout the summer.
     
  • Teen Conservation Ambassadors: Our Teen Conservation Ambassadors program is for students aged 13 through high school seniors who are interested in getting involved in hands-on conservation work and environmental projects on Long Island. Some exciting opportunities have included garden projects, creating fishing line recycling bins, building shelters for nesting terns, and more! Learn more about this program.
